Small business group benefits in Alberta

You’ve decided you want to offer benefits. Now comes the practical part: figuring out what your team would use, what you can spend and how to get a plan in place.

Can I start with a very small team?

If you’ve just made your first hire, it’s worth asking what’s available. Eligibility depends on the provider and how your business and team are set up. Tell us how many people would be covered, whether the owner wants to participate and how your staff work. We can help you find out which options are open to you.

What should I budget for?

Start with the amount the business can comfortably spend each month. When you compare options, look at the total cost, the employer share and what employees would pay. A quote is easier to assess when you can see those amounts alongside the coverage.

  • For a group insurance quote, compare the coverage, who’s enrolled and how costs differ for single and family coverage.
  • For a Health Spending Account, look at the allowance you’re setting and ask how fees, taxes and unused balances are handled.
  • For renewal planning, ask what can change over time and what information you’ll receive before making a decision.

What should I cover first?

Ask employees which broad categories would make the biggest difference to them. A short anonymous check-in can help you weigh options like dental, prescription drugs, mental health support or vision care. Once you know the priorities, compare how an insured plan, a spending account or a combination would address them.

What happens after we choose?

Set a start date and agree on who will handle enrolment and employee questions. When you introduce the plan, explain what it covers, what employees contribute, where they can check their coverage and how to make a claim. Give employees a clear contact for questions that come up after launch.

Tell us what matters to your team.

Bring your approximate team size, the coverage you’re considering and a budget if you have one. We can use that first conversation to narrow down what’s worth exploring.
